Area Model Engineering Society - SAMES The club was
established in 1972 as a breakaway from Urmston Model Engineering Society. The
founder members designed the current track layout which consists of approximately
a quarter of a mile track run. A clubhouse and truck storage areas were built
and steam-up bays were installed to allow several engines to be worked on at the
same time. The signalling system was designed and built by Tom Brown with help
from many other club members. The track can be used for both 5" and 3.5"
gauge engines and has 8 signals allowing for safe operation with 3 or more trains
running at any one time. The original fare in 1972 was 2p/ride but due to escalating
costs, especially insurance and utility bills the current fare is now at 30p/ride.
This still represent excellent value for money and most passengers have several
rides during the day. Many people that visit today with their own children remember
riding on the trains when they were young themselves. The
current membership stands at 40 members and consists mainly of men but we do have
a few female members who are also active drivers. The age of the members currently
ranges from 8 to 90 years old and the members come from a diverse background but
all have an interest in either railways and locomotives or model engineering. The
signalling system has undergone a major overhaul over the last 2 years replacing
all the original cable and installing the new cables in flexible conduit making
future maintenance much easier. The trains are run
every Sunday of the year (weather permitting) with the only exception being when
Christmas day falls on a Sunday, as the park is closed. New
members are always welcome regardless of their level of engineering skills. The
main criteria for membership are having an interest in trains or model engineering
and a willingness to work with the other regular members to keep the club operational. The
